From the rise of 3D printing, to using your smartphone to pay for your supermarket shopping; 2015 was a year filled with innovative digital developments.

Due to the mountain of new technology 2015 offered us, we were left wondering how 2016 could top it. So, we scoured the net to find the digital trends we think will skyrocket this year.

In no particular order, here’s our top five:

The release of Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard are set to make VR more accessible. Not only will you be able to step into your favourite game or movie; V-Commerce is also on its way! VR now means companies can offer their customers a fully immersive brand experience. To check out an awesome example from tequila barons, Patrón, click here.

87% of smartphone owners have used the voice assistant feature. With that stat in mind, it’s no wonder Microsoft, Amazon and Google have all decided to take on Siri. Facebook has also launched ‘M’, a virtual assistant feature attached to Messenger. What makes ‘M’ special is it uses artificial intelligence but is run by actual people, meaning it can do more for you.
Rumour has it that Australia’s wearable technology market will be worth $1 billion by 2018. Wearables were a huge hit in 2015, but in 2016 they’re taking a slightly different approach. Collecting different sorts of biometrics to inform industries, not just users. For instance, rating mattresses using sleep data or rating gym classes based on activity data.

New live streaming apps like Periscope and functions on Facebook mean you can now film video on your smartphone and stream it live to your friends. Mark Zuckerberg did just that at the 2016 Mobile World Congress last week pulling in 150,000 viewers. He admitted it’ll take time before live streaming can reach the scale of TV viewing, but he thinks it’ll happen.

From cleaning products to pet food, the Amazon Dash button, enables you to reorder your favourite household items with one press. Now Netflix have also released their ‘Switch’ that can dim the lights, put your phone on silent, order a takeaway and switch on your favourite series all with the touch of a button. We reckon there’ll be more buttons where they came from in 2016.
Looks like we’re in for a real digital treat this year! Which of these trends has you buzzing? Let us know on Twitter.
