23 Questions!
What sparked your passion for design?
Growing up reading Comic books, manga and watching old classic cartoons, as a kid I was always drawing and doodling to pass my boredom during classes at school
How creative were you as a youngster?
Quite creative I guess. My wooden table where I was sitting in my class was full of doodles and sometimes I made a sculpture from a piece of used white chalk lying on the floor during class
Do you come from a creative family? Were they supportive of your desire
to be a designer?
Not really, my sister is the only creative one besides me in my family and my parents has always been supportive of us
What sort of education and training have you had?
I completed Diploma of Printing and Graphic Arts for 2 years then went to Bachelor of Multimedia at Swinburne University, then I took industry placement program for a year and completed my degree with first class honours
Who did you want to work for when you first entered the industry?
M&C Saatchi
Tell us about your first project and what do you feel about it now?
My first project was designing a CD cover for an indie band, looking back at it now makes me appreciate how much I have learned since then
What is your preferred software to work with and what has been the
greatest advancement in technology over the past 5 years?
Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash. I think the greatest advancement in technology over the past 5 years that impact me has probably been web 2.0 and Flash Actionscript 3.0
What are the various mediums that you have worked with and is there any
that you would like to explore?
Most of my work has been involved with websites. I still focused on learning web design and development, but recently I worked at an animation studio, it was really fun and challenging. I guess animation is something I want to explore more next
Is digital technology going to eliminate the need for print?
No, I don’t think so. I believe that people will always need to feel and touch and smell the printed medium
Whose work do you really admire and why?
Robert Wijaya, a friend of mine. I admire his hard work, ambition and creativity. He is very passionate doing what he does and never stops doing it until he gets what he wanted
Who has been the greatest person that you have ever had the pleasure of
working with and what have they taught you?
Everyone whom I have been worked with. These have been the greatest people who taught me numerous skills, experience and gave their input
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
Working in the field that I’m really good at
How would you describe your work?
Simple, clean, colourful, accurate and organised
What are your plans for the future?
I would like to continue to learn more about web design and hopefully expand my knowledge to other media
What sort of company would you like to work with next?
I would like to work in a company that has a friendly environment, creative people and will give me new challenges in every project
What is your opinion of Australian design?
I think Australian design has produced a lot of high quality design that competes with the international standard. Some of the companies in Melbourne and Sydney have been recognized and are come of the best in the global industry
What is the best/worst thing about being a designer in Australia?
The best thing is probably the relaxed atmosphere that the Australian workplace has
The worst thing is too much competition and limited work available
In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge the Australian design
industry has to face in the near future?
As mentioned above
What is your creative outlet outside of design?
Playing games, drawing, and badminton
What is the best designed bar in Melbourne?
I don’t really go to bars, though I like St.Jerome’s and Riverland Bar on hot summer day
